Hi kids!

Today we’re showing you something really cool! So cool, in fact, that even our morfar (grandpa) was amazed that we made it ourselves! 🤗

Because today we’re going to show you how to easily make really pretty, colorful wire flowers and all you need is a thin wire and nail polish!

You can then use these cute flowers to decorate many other things, such as boxes, picture frames or hair clips, but more on that a little further down.

Look how beautiful these flowers are!

Flowers are the smile of nature. It works without them, but not as well.

In our last post, we painted flowers on paper with watercolors, and today it’s as if we’re conjuring these painted flowers into our world. Just as colorful, just as wild, and just as beautiful. Only we can touch them.

Our mom also thinks it’s a great way to recycle old nail polish. Admittedly, that wouldn’t have been our first thought; we just think our wire flowers are beautiful, and we’d love to show you how.

You need:

A thin wire

Wire cutters

A pen

Nail polish

A very small container that you no longer need (e.g. deodorant lid)

Something you can put the flowers in to dry (e.g. floral foam or an apple)

1. Take a wire about 20 cm long and wrap one end around a pencil. Start wrapping about 2 cm from the end and leave the end hanging out.

Use a pen that’s round and not too thick. We used a pen with small corners, which made the petals a bit square.

2. Now wrap the wire around the pin about 5 times. Each turn represents one petal.

3. Then twist the two ends together (one end is long, the other short) and pull the wire off the sift.

4. Now it can get a little tricky, because to get a flower you have to push the petals apart.

The thing is, if you push it one way, the petals will form into a pretty flower. But if you push the petals the other way, the whole thing will open up, and that’s not what we want. Unfortunately, you can only figure out the right direction by trial and error, but it’s not difficult; you’ll know immediately whether it’s going to be a flower or not.

5. Once you have formed the petals into a flower, you need to straighten the flower head, just like the roof on the T.

For the next step, it’s also very important to press the flower as flat as possible. This makes it much easier for the nail polish to stick.

6. Once you have formed enough flowers out of wire, it’s time for the colorful part of this tutorial.

To do this you need nail polish and a small container. The smaller the container, the better, because with a large one the nail polish will spread too much and you won’t be able to dip the flowers in it or you’ll have to use more than necessary.

7. Then simply dip the wire flowers into the nail polish. The flower should be completely submerged; this is the only way the polish will adhere and form a film over the space between the wire flowers.

If a petal remains without varnish, simply dip it in again. For some, we simply left the blank petal. After all, not every flower is perfect in nature.

8. To dry, simply place the wire flower in a floral sponge, or we came up with the idea of using an apple. This works great.

We have made these colorful wire flowers so many times now and have noticed that if it doesn’t work, there are several possible reasons why this might be the case:

  • the circles of the petals are too big
  • the flower is not flat enough
  • the nail polish is already too old or too “dry”
  • there is not enough nail polish left in the container, so the flower cannot be completely submerged

We think these colorful wire flowers are so pretty! They’re also magical simply tied into a bouquet as decoration, but you can also use the blossoms to embellish other things.

As an example, we’ll show you how we decorated boring hair clips with it 😍

1. Use the wire cutters to cut off the flowers.

Cut the wire as close to the flower as possible so that there is little or nothing sticking out.

2. Cut a piece of felt that is the same size as the back of the hair clip.

3. Now glue the felt piece onto the hair clip using a hot glue gun.

Don’t forget! Always have an adult present when using a hot glue gun, even if you’re using it yourself!

4. Dann klebt ihr einfach eine Blüte nach der anderen auf die Haarspange. Ihr könnt sie darauf platzieren, wo ihr wollt, ob übereinander oder nebeneinander, wie es euch gefällt.

Be careful, though, when applying the hot glue to the underside of the flower. We found that the glue melted a bit, creating a small hole. It’s best to just add a small drop in the center, where you snipped off the wire from the stem. This worked great for us.

..and we amazed many people with our colorful flowers!

Have fun trying it out!
